Default Need to strip my tank

I got all my fairings primed and ready for paint, but I need to strip the paint off the tank. What can I use to strip the paint?

Hey Murdo,

Wet sanding should be fine unless the paint is really peeling bad? No reason to make more work for yourself stripping the paint completely, its a pain! A good sanding job, primer, and your new paint will stick just fine.

Yeah, I'm not stripping my tank. The paint there is fine (though I may need to strip the gas cap they painted over ). 320 to scuff it real good. Follow up with 600 dry and wet to smooth it out then primer is my plan

Right now the clear coat is bubbly and peeling off. It has patches where the clear coat is completely off. So will the 320 grit help me take off the remainder of the clear coat? Do I have to use a special primer?

Oh by the way, the paint is not peeling, only the clear coat is peeling.

320 will cut through the clear and scuff the paint underneath which is what you want. Any primer will do just fine, tho you have to watch what clear you use on the tank.

Gas spills will eat a cheap or light clear and get to the paint. You'll get sags. Duplicolor's paint system clears says they're gas resistant but admit they can't compare to a 2 stage clear coat. They do say thicker clears and longer curing time will make it stronger vs gas. But you might try finding a auto paint supplier and see what they can recommend
