Nasty Charging/wiring problem
Okay, let me start at the beginning. I shut my bike off one day after 2 hours of riding. 3 minutes later I went to start it back up and the battery was dead. I jumped the battery with a car got the bike running, it idled for 5 minutes, stalled and I tryed starting it right after it stalled and the battery was dead again. So I discoved that a yellow lead on my rec had burnt a whole in my plug. So I bought a new rec/reg and a new connector to go into the rec/reg. As I was putting everything together with the battery still hooked up, i accidentally touch either the green or red wire (not sure which one) to the frame. This cased the main 30 amp fuse under the tank to blow. So I replaced the 30 amp fuse, plugged in the three yellow wires and the red wire to the rec/reg but as soon as i plug in the green wire the 30 amp fuse blew. I can do that process in reverse with the three yellow wire and the green wire plugged in and as I plug in the red wire, the fuse blows. Here's the catch, with the three yellow wires and the red wire plugged into the rec/reg I am able to start and ride the bike. But today I had the same problem I had in the beginning where I could ride for five minutes then it will stall out and when i go to start it, the battery is dead. If you can make and sense of this. Do you have any ideas on what I can do?
Yeah, I had a dead battery... got a jump... blew everything. When I got the jump that burnt plastic smell was definetly in the air. After extensive diagnostics ended up with a bad stator, bad rectifier, and I ended up buying a new battery. I would start off checking the battery's charge, then check if charge is going back to the battery when idling and a gradual rev to about 5000rpms. If the charge is weak then charge the battery, if the battery is good but your not getting enough charge then the regul/recti or the stator might be bad. Also check the connections making sure they are connected and good. And next you do any electrical work pull the connection off the battery first... when your done with the work install the battery last. Good luck.
