Yep, I'd go with steel sprockets and an x-ring chain.

I just went with the JT steel front and rear from moto superstore and an RK gold XSO from ebay for my 1000F. Total was like $156 shipped.

Not very hard at all. Me and friend did it in like 30 minutes. I did the 520 convert with a X-Ring chain by RK with Vortex sprockets.

The main difference is the length of the life of the chain. I used an allen wrench to remove the front sprocket cover(I believe. I did this 3 yrs ago), large adjustable wrench for the bolt on the rear axle shaft (if you still have your emergency tool bag that came stock there is one in there), needle nose pliers to remove the codder pin, chain breaker tool and a rear wheel stand that goes under the swing arm.

if this is for stock gearing why would the chain be different lengths? and i understand that a chain breaker tool is pretty self explanitory im guessing it breaks the chain but why do you need to do this and i have to go buy one of these?

To remove the chain, you have to remove a link so it will drop off the sprocket. If not, the chain will be stuck on the frame separating the main part of the bike and swing arm. I believe you can rent one from Autozone but I am not 100% on this.

You can break the chain in many ways no need for expensive special tools, one quick and easy way is the angle grinder but if you use such a tool, be very careful to not hit the frame etc.
