im having the same prob with my 94 f2...i dont kno what the deal is but sometimes it fires up and sometimes it will fire and then bog down and die and sometimes i cant start it at all....i dont kno....its frustrating as all hell tho..[:@]

 

Clean carbs first. Make sure choke works. Does it work better after it's warmed up?

 

usually in the morning i have this problem before work...then ill just say screw it, go to work, come home, fire her right up and go riding.....i just woke up and tried to start it up and it did the same thing....

 

Definitely the carbs are clogged. Probably the idle jets.

If you are brazen....then you can do it yourself.

Pull the carbs off and clean out all the jets with a small wire (need to remove idle screws which means they will need to be reset properly when done)

There's a couple tutorials in the General section for cleaning carbs, but you probably will need to go one step further by cleaning out the individual jets and all of the ports.

 

I had the same thing happen to me when I bought my bike. In fact, it was part of the reason I got such a good deal. The girl I bought it from was tired of a sometimes running bike (without a working headlight, no less).

It took me awhile to figure out, but for me it was the vacuum diaphragm in the petcock. If you're not familiar with the assembly, it's the roundish housing that bolts to the outside of the petcock opposite the fuel switch. The vacuum hose sucks against a diaphragm that then opens the fuel line. The diaphragm is a rubberized silk disc that eventually loses it's rubber. Once that happens, it'll suck air instead of opening the fuel line. The bike will start, run on the fuel in the line, then die. What makes it such a pain is that for reasons unknown, occasionally some gas will get in, wet the silk, and give it enough resistance to work again. It always happened to me in the morning, as well, soI have a suspicion that temperature has an effect on it. Anyway, for mybike, replacing that part fixes it immediately.

For about $15 bucks you can just get the diaphragm assembly from the dealer. They'll try to tell you you need to replace the whole petcock, but have them dig deeper in the catalogue. I have to replace mine every 4 or 5 years.
