I disagree. Every engine will consume SOME amount of oil. The amount in the OP is very excessive. At most it should be about half quart or less between change intervals.
I agree with riding it till it don't ride no more. If its the valve seals...that'll be quite some time as long as you keep the oil full. If its the rings, you'll have problems sooner.
