Hitting neutral out of first =(
If its that low, then your shifting technique needs to be reevaluated, or the dogs are shot. You can fine-tune the lever position with the rod that links the lever. Back off the nuts on both ends and rotate it to move the pedal up/down.
Steel toed combat boots are propaly not the best option either. Planning to get proper riding boots as i gear up next spring.
By "Dogs" are you guys talking about the shift forks? I know I miss going in to second a whole bunch, more when I'm harder on the throttle. There are also times when it actually pops out of gear for a second, when I'm going over railroad tracks or large bumps and I'm on the throttle. of course, not sure what I should expect with 43,000 miles on the bike and all original parts.
no - the dogs are the square cut teeth between the gears themselves - forks move the gears across the shaft to engage the dogs into each other.
Here's a pic of worn gear dogs:

and those slot into these recesses:

this page explains undercutting, which can reduce the slipping dogs. In our case, the engine has to be pulled and case split to replace everything, so if I were ever to decide to work on the trans in mine, I'd buy a whole set of gears and send them off to be machined first before doing all that work.

Hmm. Dunno if this is the best thread for this, but I just got back home from driving my bike to the garage and as I was going in I noticed a rather unpleasant thing: When I engage the clutch, no matter am I in gear or not, somewhere from downstairs, I get this dragging/rolling sound that stops when I let go of the clutch lever. Could it be the bearing that presses the assembly open? Is it hard to change? Haven`t ever had the chance nor the need to open a motorcycle`s engine bigger than 125cc, Which, I presume, is put up somewhat differently than these bigger ones.
