Default Got stuck in first.

So Ive never ridden a crotch rocket before and today I kicked the bike into first or so I thought and its stalled and got stuck. So I kept kickin the gears up and down and rolling the bike forward and back and when I finally got it to Neutral, I started it and for a second or two I heard a very suttle kind of a grinding sound but nothing serious. Is this bad to kick the bike through gears when not on and does anyone kno exactly what I did and if I caused any damage. Please help! thanks.

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle at all? You need forward movement to change gear.

You say you "kicked" the bike into 1st. Your terminology is confusing here. Most times when people say "kick" and gear, they're going up in gears. So if you did kick it like we mean, you went up into 2nd. From a dead stop, that'd be why you stalled.

If you've never ridden a motorcycle at all, I highly and strongly recommend going to the MSF pronto before any more riding.

Don't be to rough on the shifter... it should click through the first couple gears without moving but it is usually hard to get past 3rd without some forward movement. If you did do damage to the tranny you wouldn't be able to tell unless you ride it or take the tranny apart (unless you can still hear grinding). get a friend who knows bikes well to ride it for you to make sure it works.

You should also be able to start the bike with the clutch pulled in... even if it is in gear.

*As long as the side stand is up. If the side stand is down and you change gears out of neutral, the engine will stall electronically.
