Have you had problems shifting before? Sometimes a "lazy" shift will go into a false neutral. But usually a firm up or down will get it back in gear. It is possible the shift fork bit it ... but 5th to 6th is a relatively easy shift. Usually it's 1st to 2nd that goes bad.
If you have it home and it's still stuck, get the back end up on a stand and rock the wheel back and forth while trying to shift up or down (preferably down). An assistant is helpful but not required. Bike should be OFF when attempting this.
The bad news is the 954 does not have a cartridge tranny which means you gotta split cases to get to internals. Hopefully a firm nudge will get it unstuck.

were you able to get the bike onto a stand? if you can you could try to start it with the back tire in the air and maybe some fiddling could work it loose
