chain?

this is my first bike, is tightening the chain as easy and straight forward as it looks or is there a secret to it?

The only "secret" is wheel alignment. Otherwise, its a very straight forward process. You want to have appropriate slack range recommended by the service manual for your model.

It's pretty easy. Get the rear off the ground if you can. Dont make it too tight, and give it a good cleaning and lube when you're done.
