Cam chain
Has anyone in here had to replace their cam chain due to stretching? I had my CCT replaced a couple weeks back. The noise from that is gone, but i still have some kind of noise. It is mainly at startup. If i rev the engine it makes a noise. Not the same as the CCT noise i had. Once i put it in gear and rev it is not there. It is mainly in neutral that i hear it. The local shop had suggested maybe the cam chain is stretched. The noiseis coming from the top of the motor. Right under the gas tank. I plan on lifting the tank to clean the air filter and such. I was wondering if something might even be vibrating. I will take a look just wondering if anyone has had to replace the cam chain? I have an 87 cane with 28,400 miles. Thanks
Wow, to pull the cam chain out of the motor would take some work!
I think the motor would have to come out of the frame to do this job.
Pull the valve cover, pull the cams and the only way to get the cam chain out would be to pull the crank?
I could be wrong, but you are looking at a expensive project.
One of this sites sponsors sells a manual CCT for around $50.00.
This might be a way to adjust out the slack in the cam chain.
My old cane is a little noisy at start up, but she seems to quite after oil pressure builds and the motor warms up.
I have seen my local Master Honda Tech get an extra click or two out ofa OEM CCT by removing the unit and using a screw driver and extending the CCT to an additional length that the automatic tensioning misses.
PM me and I will talk you through it.

Thats the thing though. It isnt the CCT noise i am hearing. It is like a vibration almost. I noticed my tank moves side to side by pressing it. I am wondering if when they did the CCT, they forgot to put the rubber pieces on each side back. They did take the tank off. I could tell they did. So i will pull that and check. If not i will add something to keep it from hitting the frame. Maybe that was it. I plan on running some seafoam through it. Ride a tank of gas with seafoam out on the way to my dads. That will eat about a full tank. Then take the tank off and clean the air filter (K&N). Then see if the rubber pieces are missing. I will put a new fuel filter on then too. I just wasnt sure if anyone on here has had to replace the cam chain ever? In case i dont lose the vibration after all this other stuff. But i know it is way different then the sound i got from the CCT.
Had to replace my cam chain, but I had to replace my whole top end, head, cams and chain. Catastrophic oil failure, intake cam's oil journal clogged while I was driving up the canyon. Aluminum to Aluminum welded, then the chain pulled it apart and kept my valves from hitting the pistons, but they sure got out of timing. Luckily the bottom end and everything else was still ok. so $1500(and the factI will never let anyone do any work for me again ever)I had my cane back, this was in 2000 right after I paid her off.
On the rattle, my guess is that it is the tank, most of us have had a rattle at around the 5500-7500 rpm range and its usually the tank. The little rubber peices most guys don't even notice and just throw them away after cleaning up the shop.

I am thinking most of what i hear is the tank. I dont think they put the rubber pieces back on at the shop. I will fix that and go from there. Cant this weekend though due to rain. But we need some.
