I have a little history also. My first car had a broken shifter. I pulled the floor pan and reached down to push/pull the levers into the gear I needed. One day I reached down to push one lever out of second gear and move the other lever into third gear......and that's when I hit the tree.

I drove for almost 20 miles using a pair o vise grips to work the accelerator on my old Mach1 when the cable broke. It was a four speed floor shift by the way.

I have the opposite problem, I have trouble getting the bike into first if I'm stopped. I have to push the bike gently, or else you get that loud crunching noise, and the whole bike shutters.

^ That sounds like the clutch is dragging. Do you have a bent lever that hits the handle bar grip before letting the clutch fully disengage? That's a long shot.

Other than that you may need to bleed it. Either way it sounds like your not quite getting the full travel.
