Why do you ride a Hurricane?

Here's the history of my love affair with the CBR1K.
In 1988 I went from a Yamaha FZR125 with 12ps (the restriction for learners in the UK at the time) to a CBR1000F-H with 132PS as soon as I passed my test (starting a long history of never having any spare cash which continues to this day).
On my first day with the bike I parked her up to admire her and discovered she had a tendency to roll off the centre stand if parked on a slight downgrade. I spent hours riding round London with a snapped-off clutch lever and aching left index finger until I eventually found a replacement.
I bought a new F-J a year later. Unfortunately she was stolen and found a few hours later in pieces having been slid down the road. Hopefully the thief was hospitalised. I then got a job with a company car and didn't have a bike for a few years apart from the odd occasion I was able to rent a CBR to keep the dream alive.
After being unemployed for a while I got a job NE of London. Living SW of London I was able to convince my wife of the need for a bike and found a nice VFR800 at the local Honda dealer. A lovely bike which was really easy to ride and which served me well - until a kind lady driver destroyed it one morning riding into London.
I really fancied going back to a CBR and was put in touch with someone who was selling a 1990 model. I didn't need much encouragement to buy it (it's my current bike). She too has served me well, including 120-mile each way commutes two or three days a week. I now use her to commute 17 miles into London and back. Recently I put Michelin Pilot Road 2s on her and she feels more sure-footed than ever.
She's 21 years old with 45,000 miles on the clock. She can be ridden gently or can surprise riders on modern sportsbikes. And at least once a week I get someone pulling alongside at the lights commenting on how good she looks, how "you don't see many of those any more", even the odd "I used to have one of those, loved it". I love riding her but I fear she's beginning to show signs of age (like me), especially the dreaded CCT noise. I hope she's got a few years left in her yet.

Cam chain or what ever , your CBR can be kept running for bloody years with minimal work ....
Avoid pulling her to bits until absolutely necessary !!!
Then , do all the main stuff , tensioner , cam chain , wheel bearings , ecty ect ect ....the Hurricane forum is chockers with threads about what they need and what they do not need when being re built ...
At the end of the day , these CBR's are strong and it is way cheaper to just maintain them rather than shell out 10 grand or so for a new bike ...
loved your story .... !!
take care and keep her rolling mate !!!

In 88 I bought a new CBR1000F Hurricane. It turned out to be a super great bike. Just love how the engine revs and it sounds like a jet. Never a problem with the bike. Well in between all of those years Honda came out with the CBR1100XX so I got one of those as well. A more powerful refined bike than the 88 but I still loved the 88. It had character. Well the 88 was taken out by a cager that wasn't watching what she was doing. Last year the wife surprised me and bought me an almost brand new 96
CBR1000F. The bike had less then 4K miles. Mint. So between the 88 and the 99 CBR1100XX I have the 96 CBR1000F. I call it the missing link.

well i shall start with my riding history. I first started to learn how to ride when i was 16 years old. my first bike was a 1972 Honda cb360. Bought the bike with my first paycheck and rodethe snot out of it. Then when that died i bought a 1974 Honda cb450 and only rode it for a little bit before my dad traded it for a cow and 20 bails of hay. after that had a a friend give me a 1975 Honda cb550 that i never really got running so i sold it to have a down payment for a brand new 1997 honda magna. Rode the bike all the high school and then sold it to move to utah in 2006. Didt have a bike for awhile andthen came a cross a 1982 Honda Magna v45 that was in pieces. I completely rebuilt the bike and rode that bike all year long for 2 straight years. Then got bored with it and sold it then bought a 1994 Honda vfr750f. Did a couple mods to that bike then got married and wife made me sell it because she hated worrying about me during the winter. Didnt have a bike for a couple year and after teh divorce finalized i thought i needed something fun. So i bought a 87 camaro z28 and drove it for 4 months then traded it for a 1997 suzuki marauder 800 cruiser. Rode that bike for about 2 months and got tired of fixing it so I listed it for sale and got an offer to trade a 1995 Honda CBR1000F for it. I went and looked at the bike and immediately fell in love with it. That was the 4th of July, so as i was riding the bike home i had fireworks going off all over the place so it made it a very memorable ride home. Have had it ever since and since named the bike THOR because of the celebration on the ride home. So far it has had new tires installed and new oil and i have just been riding it everywhere i go.
