Valve Adjustment Help!!!
Hey,
This morning I decided to dive in and adjust the valves on my bike. I have read through the How-To on the site and followed my Haynes manual to the tee. I dont have the same marking on my spider gear that the manual or the how-to states. Yet lined the one marking on the spider gear w the 'T' line on my case and continued to try to adjust Inlet #2 to the ".003" clearance spec'd in the how-to. yet no matter how far I turn the valve in or out I cannot get it to make the .003 clearance. Now I have it so far out of whack I dont know where to put it back to... any advice would be helpful

trying to figure out why I wouldnt have the same markings as my manual and cbrf "how-to". And whats really throwing me is my manual tells me to check inlet #2 and #4 and in the cbrf how-to its Inlet #1 #3
EDIT: Now checking inlet #1 & #3 they seem in spec clearance.. ARG! how can my haynes manual be wrong? Now Im worried to turn the motor over with inlet #2 being so far out of wack and damaging in...

It's intake 1 & 3 first like the how-to states. I don't have a haynes, but it sounds like it's wrong.
What you need to do is loosen #2 up good (the one you played with), and then continue and finish all the rest according to the order in the factory service manual (including #2).
I would just toss the haynes (at least for this job), download the service manual HERE, and just print out the pages you need to finish the adjustment.

Use the procedure from the Honda manual available on this site, it is the same for all cane's. Also you use the marking but you might wanna check the posistion of the camshaft lobes, it makes it easier, calculate a good 2 hours to do it, just take your time it is worth it.
I find the hinda better explained.

I had trouble following the instructions on the Haynes manual too, the marks just don't line up, so I just turned the crankshaft until the cam lobe lift of the valves I want to check are pointing away 90° from the rocker arm (to the point where there isn't any pressure on it) and them measure and adjust there. Same for each pair of valves and you're done

All a bit odd really ....
but as Daniel says ....just wind each of the cams around till the lobs are pointing directly away from the lifters ... If for some reason you cant adjust clearances at that point ...you have an issue that I have never come across ever before ...
Not to try to state the obvious..LOL .... , but don't bother winding the adjusters in ....wind them out till you get some clearance and then adjust them back to the recommended settings ..
and I agree , the std honda manual is a bit clearer than the Haynes one ...

Yeah, it's a little tricky to get them right on the first try. They tend to change a bit whenever you tighten the locks. You just kinda have to do them each a couple times till you get it right.
I use the ground down 10mm deepwell/vice grips/long hex key method. It seems to work ok.
Glad you're getting her all sorted out, tho...
