Default Start problem-93 model

Hey guys!! Havent been on the forum much lately. I have been traveling with work quite a bit.

Here lately when I push the start button, the starter doesnt engage immediately. It takes several tries of pushing the start button for the starter to engage. The lights on the dash will dim when this problem shows up.

Today I took the start button/kill switch apart and sprayed electrical cleaner in it and used diernal grease, but I still have the problem. The battery connection seems good and the battery is fully charged. I also checked the main fuse connector and cleaned it as well.

Any ideas on what to check next?

Thanks guys!

Hey Ronnie,

I think it sounds like an earthing problem. I'd be chasing down all the earth points and connections and cleaning them.

Cheers, SB

Thanks guys. Jlaz, is the solenoid hard to replace?

I will do some back tracking on grounds today. I will also check the connection at the starter.

Mine is a 90 so the part is slightly different but that is the correct part. It's a fairly straight forward process to replace. The cheap replacements aren't the best, so buy two if one breaks. Still cheaper then buying the OEM part.

It can be found on the right side of the battery, by the coolant tank and rear brake reservoir. At least that is where its at on my 90. I recommend downloading the manuals that are linked in this forum and/or buying a Haynes manual.

Thanks to both of you!! I didnt know thats what that part was called. I cleaned it really good after the problem started not knowing what it actually was.

I went ahead and ordered the part and will take a chance it will resolve the problem because its only $18. I have had problems with that part before anyway, not knowing what it was.

I have had this bike 5 years and it has been really good to me!! Since I have 2 bikes and I dont get to ride as much as I want, Im going to sell the Hurricane. Has a few scuffs on the plastic from the previous owner, but it was well maintained by him and myself. If anyone is looking for a good Hurricane, please let me know. I would not hesitate to ride this bike across the country. Man I hate to part with it!! But I have to cut back on some of my vehicles.
