Default RE: reg replacement question

Devildog, please enlighten me. On my '88 the 5 wired multi plug connector is waaaaaaay too short to reach the oem connection.
question 1. How did you connect them?
question 2. how did you determine which yellow wires go where?
question 3. the other 3 wire thingie has the black wire in it. on my bike the black wire is connected outside of it. is this the same as yours?

I feel really stupid here. If you can take a photo it would be very appreciated.

Ah, light dawns, you have an 88 model - later ones had no wires.
I can't understand why the wires are too short ? Is it mounted somewhere other than behind the left side air intake ?
Sounds like someone's butchered the wiring at some stage, but extending the wires isn't a problem, if you use decent quality wire and solder the joints. Put shrinktube over when finished to keep them dry and prevent shorts.
Yellow wires are all the same - doesn't matter which you connect to which - they're all field coil wires
JUST LOOKING AT YOUR PHOTOS - THE RED CONNECTOR BLOCKS ARE NORMALLY THE STATOR CONNECTIONS - THERE MUST BE A WIRING SETUP BETWEEN THAT RED ONE AND THE REG/REC AT THE REAR ? Maybe I'm just confused.[X(]

THANK YOU! Pete you are the man, you answered all my questions. The reg seems to be in the right place, the wires on the one I bought just need to be connected to existing wires. I will tackle it this weekend and report results.
