question about the chargin system
i know the alernator charges the battery, and the regulatorworks in there too, but i just put in a new battery and drove it for maybe 30mins then it started diein' now besides those two parts i explained above does anyone else have ideas on what else could be causing a none charging system (what about that ground wire to the regulator does that have to be grounded with the regulator as the picture looks on 14-7 in the servive manual or can that green wire be grounded anywhere) im very familiar with the wiring of these bike as this is my 3rd year owning my 94' i just need some suggestions on why all of a sudden it was working fine last weekend to now not charging...

RE: question about the chargin system
Are you certain the reg/rec is actually working correctly? The alternator is essentially an AC generator. It creates AC voltage. The reg/rec converts the AC to DC. After recharging your battery with a motorcycle battery charger (or a car charger that has a 2 amp setting), check the voltage across the battery terminals with a DC volt meter. It should be between 12.3 and 13.1 volts. Now, start the engine and check the voltage again with the engine running. It should be a little over 14 volts. If not, the reg/rec is not working properly. A bad ground could be the culprit. You should also check behind the reg/rec and make sure it isn't rusty. That affects the output.

RE: question about the chargin system
Yeah, i moved the regulator when i redid the reend, i put an f4i tail on the end made it look like the f4i a lil bit, it worked fine before the move now could this be the problem is it recomended that it goes back into the spot that the ppl that desighnd the bike. or can it just be screwd in anywhere, this regulator requires a ground rite? and the ground has to be attached to the regulator or am i wrong with that.

RE: question about the chargin system
You need to make sure that the green wire is earthed (anywhere on the frame), and the reg/rec should be earthed too, also where it gets good airflow for cooling. Heat is the killer on these units. Bolt the reg rec to a bare section of the frame, firmly......
I hope the reg/rec hasn't cooked....[X(]

RE: question about the chargin system
hey shadow thanks for that suggestion cause i only have that green wire grounded i have the reg/rec under my new reend bolted to plastic that might be the cause you think? and it has great air flow there thats why i put it there if there was metal there it would be the best place but if that has to be grounded to then that might just be my problem..

RE: question about the chargin system
Yep, could be insufficient grounding.......If you can, maybe attach a thin metal plate , maybe 6'x4" as big as you can) between the reg/rec and the plastic, and then attach a ground wire between the plate and the main frame - should do the trick. The plate will help with heat dissipation too - these units get HOT ! Hope it works - run some checks on the reg/rec after you've done the mod to check the charging rate.
Nice job on the bike.
