Default Odometer correction (mechanical odo)

Please do not comment on "rollback of odo is illegal" because I'm not rolling back i'm rolling forward plus I'm keeping the bike til it drops.

History: Odo failed at 6999.9 mi. The tenths turns as normal but it won't roll over.
***Speedometer and trip Odo are unaffected***

I picked up a used instrument cluster off Ebay and I want to fix the problem by either cannabalizing the new one if a gear is the problem or replacing old otherwise. The used one i picked up has 20K miles on it whereas my bike has approximately 12K (I've kept an excel spreadsheet using the trip set since the odo failed so i have a pretty close idea as to the number of total miles...yes I'm **** but I want to know how many miles are on the bike for repair/tire wear/ etc issues).

Questions:
If I put a drill motor on the speedo cable how long will it take to go from 20k, flip and end up on 12k again? I'm a little concerned about wearing out the unit or if it will take 24 days to roll it over... if there is a more approprate method by taking it apart

Can you take it apart to reset as needed?

Anyone took one apart? Will the thing spring apart on me? Should I prep for a frustrating endeavor?

Again all....please don't even think about turning this thread into a "rollback is illegal" thread. My bike is permanently licenced (don't need to renew...montana) and I have no intentions to sell. I want to know the actual miles for my own interests.

Any info is appreciated...feel free to email me and we can discuss offline if you want.

Drill goes at around 80 KPH or 50 MPH, so 92000
even at 100MPH it would take 920 hours or about 40 days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will overheat the cable unless you lube it.
Take it to a specialist instrument mechanic - hard to do yourself without damaging the speedo.

I'd just live with it

Shadow- check you math. He doesn't want to take 92,000 miles off, he wants to take 8,000 miles off. So 100 mph backwards should take about 3 1/2 days.
Rino- if you plan to keep her till she dies, why not wait until you put another 8000 miles on her, then swap instruments.

I dont think they go backwards (without damage).

I'd have to go 92k to get back to 12. I hooked up a drill tonite and it gets up to 45mph...and yes my math says about 85 days ACK!

I was itchin to find out what it looked like so i took it apart (comes apart very easily). I gingerly looked at it but could not see how I could easily adjust. The shaft that the main odo dials ride on looks to be held in a position that i cannot take out (metal pinched at factory)

Until i dig deeper into this I think i'll play it safe and put the 20k unit in the bike and do the mental math of subtracting 12k.

anyone have any input on time required to R/R from fairing (not counting dissassembly of cluuster which is quick)? I'm tired tonite but might stay up and tackle it...no sleep for me i guess

Oh and leaving it unhooked til it catches up isn't really feasable as I'm in Montana and only expect to do about 5-7k miles per year due to long winters.

About 15 minutes to strip it and remove the whole cluster.
