final drive sprocket question
Hi There,
I am a newbie living in South Yorkshire England, I own a 1990CBR 1000FL purchased
in October last year.
I recently changed the front drive sprocket to go back to standard (ie 17 tooth),on fitting the new sprocket I noticed a slight amount of end play and slight rock on the sprocket. As anyone else come across this. I'm thinking of making a shim to take out the play. What do you guys think.

RE: final drive sprocket question
Hi Rgs and welcome ! ( We'll forgive you for the South Yorkshire bit) he he
There shouldn't be any play at all - It'll destroy your front sprocket (and chain) in short order.
Are you sure you have the right sprocket ?- has splines and two bolts to hold it on ?
[X(] Section 7 (2) of the manual shows a washer - did you perhaps leave it stuck to the old sprocket ?
Download the manual and have a look :

Hope it works -

RE: final drive sprocket question
Hi Shadow 1,
Thanks for the welcome, when the sprocket bolt (with washer) is tightened it is hard up against the shaft but not the sprocket hence the end float, the spocket fitted does not have the 2 bolts fitted as i believe these were only fitted to certain years securing a damper of some sort.
hope this makes sense because most things i say dont according to swmbo.
thanks RGS

RE: final drive sprocket question
The play isn't wildly excessive I take it. Just a minor amount not much more than 1mm or .04"? If that's it thenyes, it's OK. The sprocket doesn't get drawn fully tight as it would just slip under the nut anyway until the play was taken up, wearing the nut and/or trying to loosen it. It's there just as a retainer to not let the sprocket fall off. Some bikes do this with just a snap ring. The sprocket and shaft splines are hardened to stand this use as normal.

RE: final drive sprocket question
There is a hard fiber collar/ring that bolts to the sprocket that has no bearing on the retaining or normal function of the sprocket. It is there as a safety thing, a guide,to prevent the chain from clumping or jamming in the mechanisms if it ever derails from the sprocket. As such it's important for safety and damage preventionbutdoes nothinguntil the chain actually comes off. What can cause that? Too loose, a chain failure, etc. Not normal but can happen. Keep the ring for safety but it has no bearing on your immediate question.

Thanks guys,
now im more confused it makes sense to me that the sprocket should be tight on the shaft, all other front sprockets ive worked on had the threads on the outside of the shaft with a lock washer and big nut securing the sprocket. think i might go the shim route.
Thanks again guys
