i feel your pain, i snapped one of the studs in my hurricane but i lucked out and its not leaking. i got the stud out easy from my spare motor using 2 bolts but the snapped one didnt have enough thread do get both bolts threaded so i tried the vice grips and it broke it loose. I used 2 jack handles to clamp the vice grip but it worked. Or you could always use a cutting disc to make a slot deep enough to use a flathead to turn it.

 

I'd suggest one last effort before you pull the head off, Hawk......
A mechanic friend of mine suggests welding a T bar to the top of the stud to give you leverage....it's much stronger than using vice grips....and he's had plenty of broken studs come out this way.
Worth a try, I'd say

Thats a good idea, i wouldnt throw in the towel and pull the head yet and i wouldnt cut that stud flush either as it will really limit what you can do to get it out.

 

I had a chat to another mechanic and he has a stud extractor which has a cam and the harder you grip it, the harder the cam grabs the stud. I'm going to get one when I can find one in the stores - has many uses...........i THINK IT HAS BEEN MENTIONED HERE EARLIER but it looks like a fine idea.
He also pointed out that when using an e-z out they will spread the metal and sometimes make it harder to get the stud out.
He added that you MAY be able, with a steady hand and a good drill, be able to drill the middle out of the stud and collapse it inwards.
Just ideas from guys who have these problems on a daily basis, Hawk, and if anyone would know they would.

Thanks for the tips Pete, unfortunately there's a lack of welding equipment in my garage and I've got no experience welding Point taken about the 'easy outs' though, they will spread the stud, wedging it in the hole.

Like the idea of cutting a slot in the stud, I'll try that before I cut it any shorter. Also I have my freeze spray now, so I'll get back to it tomorrow and let you all know the latest disasters
