Cranks over slowly when using choke

Cranks over slowly when using choke
Ongoing saga...
Here's what I now have to do for cold starts:
1. Open the choke
2. Ignition on
3. Press the starter button - the starter motor cranks over slowly
4. Close the choke while still pressing the starter button - she cranks faster
5. If she doesn't start, open the choke again (cranks slowly) then close the choke (cranks faster). Usually takes two or three attempts to start.
6. Once started, open the choke till warm, and everything's OK.
Anyone any idea why starter motor is slower with choke open?
Thanks again all.

No - Maybe the choke isn't operating correctly - these bikes only get choke in the last 3/4 of the choke lever................I think the symptoms are those of a starter damper failure or a tired battery/reg rec failure
The choke issue is only pushing more fuel in which if the damper/battery were good would have the bike running immediately.
Do you get the smell of fuel when you're doing all this.............?
Try choking the bike and bump starting it on a hill - if it fires right up then check the items mentioned above..........

Thanks for the replies folks.
Don't get a smell of fuel (well, no more than usual!).
Choke works properly once bike has started. It didn't after I replaced CCT, but timing was a tooth out. Now OK.
Just fitted a new Electrosport R/R - looks like it's working OK (maxes out at 14.5V at high revs).
Also get slow cranking --without choke-- when engine is hot. Shall I try a new battery next?
**Motobatt or lead acid?**
Want to leave damper till all other possibilities have been exhausted!
