cam chain noise
hey theres been numerous post of the noies a.k.a rattle that comes from the cam chain, just letting you know that is normal on these bikes, im sure you can type in the search bar "cam chain" and fine the post that was on that if im not mistakeing the guy with the name"R1000" made a good point on this topic, and there was a way to adjust it to quiet it down a little bit but again this is normal on these bike nothing to really worry about mine has been doing it for the last 3 yrs ive ownd my cane and yeah its kinda annoying but i guess you can say that the "peeeeeer" this cat puts out lol
I got my chain to stop rattling by accident. I was changing my oil and used a can of 4-cylinder engine Restore to help my old engine a little and the very next time I started my cain it sounded great. Purring just like it should with no kind of unwanted noise at all. You can find the stuff at any auto parts store I think. I found it at advanced auto parts.
here is a picture of what it looks like

What are ya sellin this stuff?? The cam chain noise is a result from a weak spring. How does a can of "restore" fix a week spring? I wouldnt be putting that stuff in a bike my friend, bad for the clutch plates....
I thought the concensus around here was that the rattle is normal and not a problem so long as the rattle goes away once the engine warms up to operating temperature. That's what my bike does- it rattles when cold only.
Yes, they all rattle after a while, but although mine quietened down when warm, I decided to change it because the "startup rattle" was loud and annoying - I found that the camchain had stretched, and there was about 10mm play between the cam gears - NOT a good thing. If it gets excessive, you COULD have a problem with the chain whipping and jumping teeth - not a good thing either. Gill (Hi buddy !) mentioned that when he stripped his down to replace the tensioner he found that there was a varnish-like deposit on the tensioner unit which may have been causing the tensioner to stick, and the chain to rattle. I replaced the camchain on mine, but used the original tensioner (there is a Honda mod for the tensioner, with a longer plunger unit but I decided not to use it)
Nice and quiet, now, and took about 4-5 hours to do....
Oh, and Micah, all that stuff does is mask the symptoms of a rattly chain, and mess with your clutch plates, and oil flow - NOT designed for Honda engines - I'd drain it before you have problems, as Gill says.
