The cam chain sits in the middle of the engine between the cams and pushes out so it is only visible by removing the rocker cover.

As has been covered before they make a noise like an old typewriter until the engine is warm. If they continue to make a noise after a few mins then its shagged.
I normally check my valves every 10,000 ks. I have done !40,000 hard km's and they still dont need adjusting.

HTH

Hello..
Now your in for the fun!! First, before removing the cam chain tensioner you should have set the engine on TDC (Top dead Center) so you would be able to alight the cams exactly where they are suppose to go. On the LEFT cover of the bike (If you were sitting on it) there is a timing mark that aligns up with the block of the motor to give you TDC. Then you install the cams by the marks on the cams themself with the block. If you did not set TDC BEFORE you pulled the engine apart, you could be 180 degrees out, and that is a LOT of work to find out after putting everything back together. My suggestion is to get a TDC spark plug tool and install it in the #1 cylinder and find your compression stroke and align the TDC mark on the side cover. THEN install the cams back the way they are suppose to go. Check some of the old forum links here, someone has posted a online manual and it shows you how to adjust this properly. All the CBR 1000F are basically the same, i used this same manual for my 95. I just got finished doing my cam chain last week, and the manual worked fine for me. Be very careful, it would be a bad bad bad day to have your intake valve open when the piston decided to come up on the compression stroke!!!! We are talking expensive repairs, so take your time and get it right. If the Piston is at TDC, and the alignment mark on the crankshaft are aligned, then you got it. You mount your cams back in with the alignment marks with the block and you are good to go. A manual is imperative when doing this sort of repair, unless you have done it before. Just do a little research and you'll be back on the road and running again.
