I agree, I think it has been abused and then sold. Our friend was forced to buy it after he dropped it hard during a test ride while in a curve. He claimed the rear brake locked up when he used the rear brake to take off a little speed while setting up to run thru a curve. Said the brake locked up and stayed that way, thats what took him down. From what I saw inside the rear brake I think he's being honest. It was so full of corrosion the bleed valve was even plugged solid. The rear tire was bald, looked like strings of cord down the center. Could not believe the guy let anyone ride it. Then make them buy it as if it was top notch bike before the ride. Our friend was at the end of a twenty minute test ride when he went down. He's owned it for over a year and when he took it for a ride today it was his second ride on it. His face was all smiles on his return about forty minutes later. I hope I gave him what he should have experienced on his first ride. I found sloppy work and abusive evidence on many places and parts through out the bike. I'm not charging him for anything but parts and his bill now stands at about $650.00. Your help has been appreciated since it was very close to being scrapped. I took it on as a winter project. He wants to keep it, I told him not to flog it to much it's been abused enough and with moderate demands with heavy loading once in a while it might make him a good bike for maybe a few years. I told him once he takes it back from me bring it back after 3k miles so I can recheck the valve clearances. Do you think I was too positive about the out come??

Just a quick thank you to everyone for your knowledge, thoughts, and input for all the repairs on my friends 1990 cbr1000f. I learned alot and the bike ended up being quite the beast again. My friend picked it up last week and he just could not keep the smile off his face. For me that was worth all the work.
Thanks again

Tim

You are a good friend BIKERTUCKER. I admire the fact that your pay for your time and effort was a smile and that was worth it all. It says a lot about you!

Well thanks Steve-o, but it also means I could never make a living doing something I love to do.

Slightly loose is better on these bikes.........a little noise is a small price to pay.
Little late to chime in I know, but I thought I'd pass along something my dad said to me when we were setting the tappets on my '48 Ford (first car)

"It's better to have them loose and talking to you than be too tight and burn up in silence"
