I am having the same popping noise, but i think im running rich on account of my filter smelling very bad of gas and can smell quite a bit of gas while letting it idle. I also am not getting the worlds best gas mileage.
I am not sure if it has been jetted. Ill post up a picture I snapped when I cleaned the carbs.

This happened to me before. I found out that the popping noise when decelerating came from the PAIR valve system. So, I eliminated the PAIR valve system. I did this to my 97 VTR1000 Superhawk when I put a slip-on on it. My F4 now does the popping noise, but it does not bother me as much anymore. I will probably remove the PAIR system in my F4 when I rejet/ sync the carbs. The PAIR valves are loated on top of the valve cover. I think the F4 has two. Look for two hoses connecting to the top of the valve cover into a housing. Inside the housing there is a reed that opens and closes. I have seen a plate that is sold to replace the housing and seal the valve cover openings. You would then need to remove the hoses and block off where they come from. You could also flip the reed inside the housing to seal the valve cover. This is what I did on the Superhawk. Sounds like a lot, but do a yahoo search on it and you should find stuff on it. Also, if you have a repair manual, look up the PAIR system so you could get a better understanding of where it is and what it does. I have also done this to my very first F3.

Pics? Write up? lol
Would my F2 have the PAIR system? How would deleting this stop the popping?
Sorry about all the questions the noise bothers the heck out of me. Especically when my buddies 05 600 RR is purring like a kitten on decel.
