Guys....The Gap is a great road to ride but is a place where a lot of idiots ride! A lot of people ride over their skill level or have the skill set but are ignorant and do not RESPECT other riders on the road there. I just rode it yesterday and it is nicer than years past since it is closed to thru traffic.
There are at least 2 TN troopers stationed on the Gap. One a mile in from the gate on the resort side and one at the bottom by the barricades at the bridge. On the weekends Fri-Sun they have more troopers stationed on the road. Tickets and fines are heavy.
I ended up talking to a trooper for about 10 minutes when we were there. He said that they close the gate when the are trying to catch an ASSHAT rider. Then they filter the riders out slowly until the get the ASSHAT that they are looking for.
One rider in our group went into a hairpin at 50 MPH and low sided. The bike stopped halfway over the edge of the cliff. Another rider with us high sided on NC 28. He went into a right hand descending turn to hot, panicked grabbed the front brake, he went one way the bike the other. He is lucky that he didn't get hurt worst. The bike flipped and then slid into the mountain rock face.
Not trying to kill your enthusiasm, just want you all to be safe and not be looked at as another ASSHAT SQUID! There are a lot of other boards out there that think that anyone that rides a sport bike is a ASSHAT SQUID!
If you are all pumped up and want a few alternatives to ride, try NC276, NC 215, NC 28, NC 209.
And one last thing!!! Ride safe , responsible and RESPECT THE OTHER RIDERS!!
