Unhappy struck by left turn?

Why am I hearing that we get struck by a car making a left turn? How is this possible? The car would be in the lane to the right. You can't make a left turn from there. You have to be in the left lane.

It's the kobayashi maru of riding. It refers to a car turning left in front of a bike. There's not much the rider can do besides clamp on the brakes and swerve, and that's if they're lucky enough to see it coming. Dangerous on a two-lane highway, especially on a sportbike that can be tough to spot if a driver isn't paying close attention. Speed makes it worse, but it's been known to happen to cautious riders as well

The city version is a bit different, though more survivable in general since speeds are usually lower

As you enter the danger zone, the area where their actions will require you to react, a scan of your possible exits and general surroundings will offer you something. Prepare feet and hands to get the job done. Don’t narrow your vision as there are still other ongoing possibilities of danger. And then your in the hands of the gods, pray they behave, then relax and breathe again when you pass easily.
As Tentacle’ said, there is little you can do and this highlights how vulnerable we are on our bikes. Some of the clips you can see of huge head on car crashes shows how well occupants are protected but a bike gives you nothing. The only help is our ppe.
Sobering scenario.

Oh, OK. Left turn from the opposite lane at an intersection. That makes sense. I saw a sedan and a minivan making turns at an intersection once. The sedan broadsided the minivan which overturned. No doubt if the minivan were a motorcycle the driver would be dead.
