You should slap them instead. Save a life, slap a squid.

BTW, I don't even get how shifting would be in any way comfy with flip flops on.

Yeah I like them. Hell better than no protection at all. Plus they are like $25 can't beat the price. I did some research and the alpinestar smx 2 boot is what I think I'm goin to get....apparently these boots used in combo with the guards offer the same protection as a full boot! Anybody have any experience with these?

They will offer the same or similar frontal impact protection. But again, nothing to prevent flexion or extension or their associated injuries. You just have to decide how important the particular protection is - how often do you think something is going to hit you in the front vs. how often you might twist your ankle in a fall, a crash, uneven pavement, etc.

I wear Sidi Vertigo on the street and Sidi Vertigo Corsa on the track. I can cover the street Vertigos with my riding pants so they don't look quite as noticeable.

If you're in gym shows now, anything semi-designed for riding will be better.

Get something that fits your budget and is comfortable, that offers the best support for the money. You may have to sacrifice one type of protection for walking friendly or cost. If so, like I said, it's better than what you've got now.
