Hi, hope someone can offer some advice. (thanks in advance)

My son's bike kept cutting out on him, and we thought it could be ignition, fuel or battery related, but it then stopped and wouldn't start again.

We checked some very basics, battery etc but then recovered it to a garage.

They've had a look and obviously done a compression test and they're saying its low.

Given the cost of a second hand engine, how far should I go with letting them open it up?

Also, it's a 2017 bike, what year engines are compatible?

It's hard to give an opinion not knowing any of the bikes history. Have you had it since new in 2017 or are you recent owners of it? If compression is truly low, what is the specific measurement that they got and what is the factory spec indicate it should be. For a single cylinder engine, it should be easy enough for a shop to get an inspection camera inside the cylinder to evaluate the cylinder walls. Having someone tear down the engine could easily cost more than a replacement engine if it comes to that.
