Default where to shift

i have a lot of cars and motorcycles over my short years on the road and i always hear people tell me to shift where the hp/tq is the maximum on the dyno sheet. why?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? this makes no sense to me. I would think that you should shift where going to the next gear creates a maximum hp under the curve. wouldnt this create maximum efficency to get to the highest speed the quickest?

You should shift to stay as near the hp peak as possible. Do a search many of us have laid this out before.
