WARNING!!!! Be Careful Of Hot & Soft Asphalt. Don't Learn the hard way!
when i was in college- they repaved my apartment's parking lot and i routinely sunk about an inch or 2 deep if the bike was in the same spot all day. i usually parked in the same spot too - damn that spot looked bad after a year of living there.
it's nice to find a small flat piece of wood or something.
my friend had one of these
Show Chrome Rubber Kickstand Foot 4-235
not too expensive if you're really worried about it.

Here's another peril of hot asphalt--when I was a kid there was a patch of road near my house that had been tarred over. We thought it was cool to race our Schwinn's up to, hit the brakes and throw the handlebars down as we went into a brodie slide. The tires would squeal like a small car!
Then one day it got hot. Threw my bike into a slide and yikes! That tar was more like an oil slick--no squeal at all, and I went down as the tire glided across the now molten tar.
Be careful on sprayed blacktop surfaces and tar strips on the road seams--this stuff is not your friend.
Cheers!

Just a heads up, you can go into a lot of insurance places and get a free kickstand puck. They'd rather give you a puck and not have to pay for the repairs when it falls over.
I just carry one in my underseat, when I hop off I just throw it under, works good because there are a lot of dirt parking areas around here too including my dads house.

I got one from our local Honda dealer. They use them in the showroom to protect the floor. I asked if they would sell me one and the guy just gave it to me. At work I have metal plates scattered everywhere I park. Had to paint my name on them so nobody would throw them away, lol.
After creating a few divots on my dad's asphalt driveway I learned to pull the bike partially into the garage for the concrete floor. Now I just usually hunt a patch o'concrete. Most sidewalks around where I live work, as long as they aren't a main thoroughfair for pedestrians. My driveway is concrete so I'm good at home at least.
As for the kickstand thing... What a scary thing to come out and see your bike about to tip over. After that happened to me once I always carried a puck with me. Any time I see them being given out for free I snag what I can. Soda can works great in a pinch or a peace of old wood.
