In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have "the rule of thumb"


this is false.. this is actually a law that was presented more recently than this..

the law originated White County, AR. Searcy, AR when like it says it became legal for every first monday of the month, a man could discipline his wife with a switch no thicker than his thumb.

but a good dig none the less, i only know this because i have physically pulled the documents in the court clerks office regarding this law. (something i had to do for work while running title on oil and gas property.)

keep in mind the town of Searcy, AR still makes thier prisoners who have court dates walk to the courthouse (.5 of a mile) in full jumpsuit and chains. ?(even for things as minor as a bag of pot or public drunk.

they see it as public humiliation will stop return offenders.
