I first saw this list in 2001, and being the doubting Thomas that I am, had to research it...

(Ignore the numbers, my original list was slightly different than this one...took me hours to research this stuff and had it posted on a website for years).

Rule of Thumb - Probably true.

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV were Fred and Wilma Flintstone.
It was "Mary Kay and Johnny" in 1947.

Coca-Cola was originally green.
Though this tidbit of knowledge has been widely distributed as part of an Internet "Did You Know?" list, at no time in Coca-Cola's history has that beverage been green. The original formula called for caramel to give Coca-Cola its rich brown color, and although the recipe has undergone some changes through the years, none of them affected the ultimate color of the product. (From Coca-Cola website).

3. Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the US Treasury.
In total, Parker-Brothers has printed more money for the Monopoly games than the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

4. Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better. It is interesting to also note that women can be HEARD better.
Scientifically speaking, high pitch noises carry better than low pitch noises, and can therefore be heard more clearly, and for much longer distances.

5. The state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work:
Alaska
True, but NOT the largest NUMBER of people who walk to work (based on 1990 census. On average, about 25-30,000 people WALK to work in each state. Alaska has a low overall population (less than 1/2 that of Dallas) so the % is high.

6. The percentage of Africa that is wilderness: 28% now get this...

7. The percentage of North America that is wilderness: 38%
No idea where this one came from...according to the US Parks and Wildlife and the Sierra Club, theres about 164,200 sq miles of wilderness in the US, 282,000 sq miles in Canada (that makes 446,200 in North America), and 338,870 in Africa. There's 9,500,000 sq miles in North America and 11,687,187 sq miles in Africa, making the amount of "wilderness" in North America at 4% and in Africa at 2.8%.

8. The cost of raising a medium-size dog to the age of eleven: $6,400 (note that it's gone up since my list)
About right; average of slightly less than $600 per year ($25 mo for food, $10 mo for heartworm prevention, and anout $200 per year for vet check ups and shots).

9. The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour:
61,000
According to the International Air Transport Association in Geneva, 1.557 billion people were carried on flights throughout the world in 1999. If this figure is divided by the number of days in a year, we can calculate there are 4,265,753 passengers in the air throughout the course of a day. This is 0.071 per cent of the world's population of 6 billion people. To find out how many people are flying at any one time, we first had to know how long each traveller is airborne. In 1999, 2,764,629 million passenger kilometres were flown worldwide. If this figure is divided by the 1.557 billion journeys flown each year, we can calculate that the average distance flown on each journey is 1753 kilometres. The average airliner flies at a speed of 851 kilometres per hour, including take-off and landing. This means the averagepassenger is airborne for 2.06 hours per journey. If the figure of 4,265,753 passengers in the air over a given 24-hour period is divided by the number of 2.06-hour periods in 24 hours, we can calculate the average number of people in the air at any one time. This is 366,144 or 0.0061 per cent of the world's population. The US land mass accounts for only
17% of land mass where flights take place; that is about 62,000.

10. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.
No basis whatsoever in science. It traces back to blondes - red and dark hair

Oh man, I spent hours and hours (actually, probably about 8).

I was the editor of the company weekly newsletter and somebody sent that to me and wantedit put in the newsletter. Look any good editor, I had to check my facts. It was OK, since I was getting paid to do it!

I posted it on the company website, and then found it stolen to several other sites (with no credit, of course).
