Yea man call them up, I'm sure they'll be able to do something for you. I'm a tech at a Ford dealership and we run into this sometimes too. Not too long ago I had a 2005 Freestyle with a crunk A/C compressor. It was 2000 miles out of warranty. The customer didn't even have to call Ford, we did a P05 after warranty adjustment per my service manager. Customer just had to pay a small part of it (not much) and we did the rest under warranty.
A buddy of mine had 2006 Yammi R6 with 12k miles that the motor blew up in 2 months out of warranty. He called up Yamaha corporate and [eventually] they agreed to pay for both parts and labor so they went ahead and fixed it. Took them about 3.5 months and they finally got it fixed, my buddy went and picked it up, and on his way back to the office from the dealership a lady in a land rover turned left in front of him and totalled the bike.... 13 miles on the new motor... sucks!! (but at least my buddy was OK for the most part!)
But call them up....worst they can say is no
I think that with today's engeniering they actually make the car parts last exaclty until the waranty expires. Things should get interesting now that some car companies are offering lifetime limited waranties. but to all of us that have older cars, as soon as the warranty is over, its time to start replacing parts or to get a new ride.
I'm a rotary fan, so I own an RX8. GREAT CAR BTW but my warranty was over 2 months ago. 3 weeks after my warranty expired, my power steering failed and the A/C refrigerant sprung a leak. The dealer did make a "special consideration" and honored an out of warranty request. I did have to send a letter to the mazda Importer here in Puerto Rico but it was the dealer that hellped me douring all the procedure to get the importer to honor the warranty.
I gave the service rep a bottle of wine for that one. Would have cost me $2,800.00 USD to get it fixed otherwise.

I fourth the motion to call and politely challenge them to be 'professional grade.'
