It has nothing to do with pollution or the object killing people on the ground, the government don't care about that, that is just happy horse**** nonsense.

It is just target practice or a way to gather data to defend against Anti-sat weapons. I think last year China launched an A-sat weapon and our Gov't kinda freaked. Without satellites our ability to wage war is severly hampered and given China is launching everything into space the U.S. military needs to figure some stuff out. Of course if the satellite makes it through re-entry and passes on info, that is even worse.

What ever it is, it is an opportunity to learn something or stop someone else learning about your stuff.

columbia hit the earth with the same type of fuel on board (OMS fuel, thruster fuel, andAPU fuel). columbia was many times bigger and heavier than this satellite and hit the ground in about 5000 pieces.

nobody on the ground was injured.
