The OODA loop saved my butt today
Took an early morning ride before work this morning on a favorite two lane highway full of twisties. On my way back home, I found myself behind a couple of riders on sport touring bikes. They were moving along pretty good, and there was only a couple of corners left so I decided to stay behind them rather than pass. These riders seemed to know what they were doing (head-to-toe protection, proper lane position, following distances, etc) so I didn't feel that I needed a huge buffer between us. Just as we approached a particular nasty 30MPH rated, decreasing radius turn (we were moving at 65MPH), the lead rider went into full panic stop, temporarily locked the rear tire and began drifting across the center line. Rider #2, who had just begun to move into single file position, swerved right toward the shoulder and was able to break without locking the rear wheel. Unfortunately, I didn't have many options, but I did perform an OODA assesment when I decided to follow this group. That made my reaction time much faster, and instinctive. As I began to brake and move to the right of Rider #1, I found 3 stray dogs were playing in the roadway and blocking our lane. Rider #2 was slowing rapidly, passed the dogs and moved back towards the lane center. That left a nice path for me to dart toward the right hand shoulder, past the dogs and Rider #2. As I accelerated away, I could see in my mirror that Rider #1 was pretty in the worst position as she was completely stopped with 3 stray dogs darting back and forth in front of her bike. She couldn't go anywhere until the dogs decided to move.
Thanks Col. Boyd.
