Default HELP!! Off to a bad start

Hi from ca.
Just picked up a 2000 929 after a 7 year no bike haveing dry spell. I thaught I was going to have a damn anxyaty attack before I picked it up. Life just is not the same w/o a bike.
I rode my yellow dream for three days when it started stumbling all over itself under 5k then launching the front end like everything was great.
I'ts been in the shop for two weeks now, and I just got the word i'ts the ECM, OEM is just under $1k wonderfull !!
This is my 18th bike and I bought a Honda to a lage extent for the dependability.
So far I love the bike even if I have only put a few hundred miles on it.
What I really need is to hear from anyone that has any info on running a 49state unit on a CA. bike. Any info on the ECM would be great.
I am soooo ready to ride, but I'm not made of money. HELP!![:@]

I am not sure how this works with motorcycles, but I used to manage car dealerships (Porsche and Ferrari) and I know that on cars there is a federally mandated emissions warranty that covers the Engine Management Computers, catalysts, and exhaust manifolds for (I believe) 8 years. On cars, this warranty is even more generous in California covering items like spark plugs, O2 sensors, secondary air inj. systems and just about anything else emissions related. I would certainly call Honda Corporate and ask them if there is a special emissions warranty for the ECU. They will probably tell you to contact your dealer, but be persistant.

ok, just found my Honda Warranty manual (keep in mind this is for a 2005 bike, may have been different in 2000) and on page 8 it reads:

"(The Emissions Warranty) begins on the date the motorcycle is delivered to the first purchaser other than an authorized Honda motorcycle dealer, or the date it is first used as a demonstrator, lease, or company vehicle, whichever comes first and continues for the time and mileage listed below:

Time: 5 years
Mileage: Based on engine displacement
*50 to 169 cc: 7,456 miles (12,000 km)
*170 to 279 cc: 11,185 miles (18,000 km)
*over 279 cc: 18,641 miles (30,000 km)

The Emissions Control System Defects Warranty is in addition to the Americal Honda Motorcycle Limited Warranty..."

Then on the covered parts list (page 11) it lists many parts including "Engine Control Module"

Assuming that you have under 18000 miles you need to find out the delivery date, get a copy of the warranty manual, and take this all to the dealer and get it covered... if it is over the 5 year mark it will not be by much; I would call Honda Corporate and explain how much you love Hondas, how you are a really loyal customer (if this is true), that you are about to buy your wife a VFR (even if it is not true), that you buy their bikes due to their known reliability, and that you think they should offer you some "goodwill assistance."

Keep in mind, Squeaky Wheels Get Oil

Hope this helps
