Went to look at a bike today, which turned out to be not a bad buy, £1750 for M reg. CBR600 with full £560 mot receipt for fork seals, etc., 2 new pirelli's and general good mechanical and general except for some light cosmetic rhs damage but for my first bike at 22, ideal. However, the seller was a taxi company owner who took the bike in a swap for a pug gti for his boy to trackday and the original owner was still on the V5. The old boy just wanted shot of it and knew fa about bikes but when I asked if I could contact the previous owner, I was told I couldn't cos he was in the jail and wouldn't say what for. Although the seller was in possession of all the docs and seemed reputable enough and the bike was right, where does the law stand on the signing over of the V5? The previous owner cant sign it over cos he's in jail and the taxi company said he was only down in the autotrader cos he shifts his old taxi's through it (i.e more than three sales per year). Smell something fishy? Long way for a story but had a few beers, bn a long day looking about. I would be grateful for any advice you can offer on this matter, I reckon bin it and mark it up as a good learning experience.

Had similar problem with an RSV, owner couldnt sign reg doc, so I got a form sent to me by the dvla, fill it in with reg no. frame no. etc, then send it to the dvla, they then write to the owner, he has 14 days to reply, if he doesnt the bike is signed over to you automatically. Make sure you get the bike hpi checked first, make sure its not been involved in a: anything illegal or b: finance agreement (except if its now clear).

Whether you would do all that before or after purchase i dont know - maybe you could pay a deposit on the understanding that it is all processed properly, on the plus side time of year is on your side as it is B*****d cold, and considering the hassle id ask for more cash of.

 

Long story short, bike was allegedly imported in 97 by Grant Cycles (of bob grant fame for those scots follwers of supersports) So phoned them and asked them to clarify the history, gave the guy the reg and he asked if it was purple/black to which I replied no its black/burnt orange therefore clolours dont match model year. Either an ex track bike or a ringer, most likely the former since the guy had a pug 205gti for his daughter to hoon round knockhill. The hunt goes on....
