The new sku is a finned version, instead of flat-epoxy fill.
That's how you can tell if it's dated or not.

The funny part is that's only true on the CBR one, The Silverwing has the fins and is a lot better made then the ones Honda used on the newer model bikes. Don't ask me why Honda made a part right then screwed it up 10 years later. I have no clue.

Default Thanks for the Warm Welcome

Mr. JVeach, MadHatter & All,

Your 500 SilverWing is simliar to my 650. The guy that had it was turning it into a Bobber. The fairings are gone and I got it torn apart for $ 100.00 bucks. It came with two tires that were like new and all the parts & bolts. It was taken apart carefully to repair the charging system. It's been laid down but the bike looks real fine overall and low miles.. I think 15K on the speed-o. The bike does not show a lot of wear on the foot pegs and other places that you'd look for wear.

The Hurricane is 1st on the list to get up & running. I'd like to ride it to work (gas mileage) and concerned about hitting a deer. I travel (1 way) 46 miles through FL & AL farm land to arrive at Ft. Rucker, AL by 10 PM. I come home at 6 AM and think my risk would be good for the return trip in daylight.

No Matter.. I'm going to try to ride to work a few times a week. I plan on going a lot slower than normal through the area where I see the deer the most. I destroyed the front end of my Dodge Ram when I hit a deer at 60 MPH, this happened in Nov. of 2011. If I hit one with the Hurricane it might do me in.. I was looking to live a few more years.

I was looking into a bolt on trike kit and some sort of nose rails to kick the deer back over the top of me. I never saw anything like I'm describing.. just know I don't want to have a 150 lb. deer in my lap or just clean me right off the bike (big bummer).

Thanks again,

Avery

P S. I'm going to tell the story about the Prop. Driven Bike that I made, I was 16 YO. It was something that ... Rube Goldberg could not have designed (drunk or sober)... quite a death trap contraption. The story will be posted at Oddity (anything goes). I will tell the tell for the joint laughter factor... for all the old folks 1st and the younger folks as well.

As a fellow rider who has hit a deer. Trust me it's not fun! I hit one last August on my F4i, I was going about 60mph around 10pm at night heading home. Next thing I know I was laying on the ground and a deer was flopping around beside me. I didn't even see it at all. All I can remember from impact is the sound BOOM of the impact. It Distroyed my bike. I have pic's of the damage in my photo albums on here.

I now use those lil deer siren things they sale for cheap. I forgot the real name of them, but they are the lil things you buy and stick on the front of your car and it makes noise that is suppose to scare off any deer. I don't know if they work or not, but after me hitting one I decided it was worth the try. I live in Kentucky, the deer are everywhere.

Default Yes, Sir... Them Deer is Down Right Dangerous to Man Kind !

I'm Semi Serious about coming up with a deflector shield to prevent serious injury. I'm a fair + builder & fab. man. I have a full shop and just need a few ideas to build from. If this shield worked one time & saved my life or prevented serious injury.. I Win (my Life may continue on).

It's not like " if it will happen, ".. it's only a matter of time until I hit a deer and boom.. I'm hammered ! When I hit the deer with the pick up it was super fast; I saw a brown blurr and then boom, the pick up was totaled and that was a full sized -- 2001 Dodge 3/4 ton pick up.

Absolutely correct, its not fun at all! Been there done that myself.

In my riding area now, the main concern is turkeys!...yep, turkeys! Side-swiped one a few mos back. Trouble is, they're usually in groups - that makes it even more dangerous when they're crossing the road! :-O

Also of concern are the flying debris that come out of trucks. A couple of years back, I was on the freeway & came up behind an open-top work truck. Next thing I know, roofing shingles were flying out! One hit my windscreen & ricochet'd off my helmet's visor & finally my leather riding jacket. The other hit my L side air intake & broke it in half. Thankfully, that was all that happened b/c I was at interstate speed & it coulda been a lot worse.

Have you considered an ultra-sonic deer siren, mounted on the front fender?
I've heard they are fairly effective. I have not done the research, though.

Yes... the Sonic Deer things seem to work. I'm concerned about the deer that is on the move and not standing there (I see the deer in my lights). This buck was really moving and was like a brown bullet.. going as fast as he could I'd say.

Now, how can I protect myself against this type of deer accident.. really tough to guard against. I've had two other hits this way.. and the deer were running a full speed and wham.. car is totaled.

Those sonic devices work great in a straight line. However, when you're riding twisties, especially in canyons/mountains, they're not going to be worth much coming around corners. ;-)

I just made a commitment to buy a Suzuki 800 Intruder with 14.8 K miles on Monday (14th). It's set up like I want and has a windshield, new tires and saddle bags and very nice.. well taken care of ... for $ 1,800.00. The man works at the same airfield I do and I expect No surprises on Monday. He got the bike from his father-in-law with 6 K miles and has the owners manual & service records, etc. .

Yes, the Hurricane & SilverWing are still going to be repaired and on the front burner. I needed a bike now and the Intruder is a decent commuter bike and set up right with windshield, etc. .
