Oh no...another rattle thread
Thanks, I'll shoot a better one this weekend.
If it IS the alternator chain, looks like I'd have to split the cases to fix it. Is this a benign rattle, where it's just an inconvenience but won't cause any serious damage? Or is it likely to give out some day?

Thanks for the input. If it is indeed the CCT, from what I'm reading on the forum, there shouldn't be any danger if I can't attend to it immediately, right? It's not causing something else to wear, nor is it going to suddenly snap or jump and throw off timing. It's mostly just the annoyance if hearing it rattle, correct?
If it is badly worn/broken it can cause the chain to be so loose that it skips timing and will bend a valve. It is normal to have some noise when warming up but if yours is constantly noticeable I'd get it fixed asap. Not 100% sure if it is your CCT but thats probably where I'd start.
It certainly sounds like the CBR1000F dreaded timing chain rattle. Plenty of info on the site on how to change it, one of the best by Naga Thai if I remember correctly.

Hmm so I turned the crank manually and took measurements every inch or so down the length of the chain. It is definitely slacker in some places (between 2 and 3 mm if travel at the center) than others (barely any motion at all). This doesn't necessarily mean the CCT is at fault, because I assume the CCT can't do its job properly until the engine is on and oil pressure builds.
