All these replies helped me to remember a survey Harley Davidson sent me
in 1992. I thought it a bit strange since I have never owned a Harley.
I received it just after I bought a new 1992 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500.
The questions were of the following. Would you support Harley Davidson
clothing outlets. Would you support HD children's clothing outlets.
Would you support HD Resorts and restaurants? It continued with about
six pages of this type of questioning. It had a place at the end for input
and I wrote, Please don't forget to build great motorcycles. Is the reason
I can't understand Harley's choice's and the choice's people make in buying
a Harley is IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MOTORCYCLE. It's about the ACCESSORIES.
Is that the key to the Genius of their marketing. It's not about the motorcycle
for it's performance, handling, or how you stack up when put side by side
with other motorcycles. The motorcycle is just another one of the
accessories. Does that explain when they, after everyone else did twenty
years ago, begin to put steel belted tires on their bikes. They present it
as almost a new motorcycle, and are so excited. I, on the other hand, say it's about as exciting as yellow lens sunglasses. I guess it's all about put
on your HD-Pants,HD-shirt, HD-boots,HD-scarf,HD-socks,HD-belt,get
on your HD-motorcycle and ride with others who also think these things
are important in their lives. Then it seem's Harley Davidson would like them
all to ride to a HD- resort and restaurants. I have seen a HD- restaurant in
Sheboygan Wisconsin, and it was surrounded by, You guessed it. People
on HD- bikes with all the accessories. Another part is why would you update
the motorcycle accessory any more than the socks accessory,or the
belt accessory. Even if I'm only part correct, it's still a bit sad. Both for
the people and the company.

How about the fact that the say they have 32 different models? Ok, lets count them..
(1) the Sportster
(2) the Dyna
(3) the Softtail
(4) the V-Rod

Change the Sportster motor form 883cc to 1200cc and that entire line makes all new models. Move some rear fenders around or put a springer front end on and you have many, many more models. Now paint them black and you multiply everything by 2.

My point is they only have so many motors but 32 models. There is no creativity there, other than marketing.

If it's 22*F in your garage open up the garage door. Weather.com says it is 41*F outside your front door right now.

You bet! It's totally disgusting. The big three went to congress and were asked what they were going to do to change the present operating conditions to make things better. They replied that they were going to produce better fuel economy cars and more electric vehicles and things like that so they were loaned money. What has HD brought to the table for the cash? I don't know....more HD pens and crap like that, certainly not better bikes.

I did just that, it was so nice I went across the street to help my
neighbor. By sundown back on my way home, cold again. What
does Weather.com say now

I also have not read of any standard for Harley like the auto companies. I guess when your the best, what else can you do.
