Cam Chain & Tensioner Replacement
#51
Don't go breaking that primary chain Pete. I know you didn't mean that!!!
Could mean a bit more than fixing the whole effing lump if it gets trapped on the crankshaft when it goes bang. I shat myself at the thought of that when my tensioner collapsed.
Anyway, I need to do what you're saying too, just for good measure. She's running well, not too noisy from the cam chain most of the time.
What I"m really looking forward to though is rebuilding the head and changing the gasket, possibly new rings or a rebore if needed. That'll make a big big difference. Still got that damned ticking noise since the last major rebuild, but after more than 20K miles it hasn't got any worse so I'm not worried about mechanical failure, it's just bloody annoying.
You must have a very sound proof helmet. Mine doesn't really make much difference.
Ah well.... Keep safe mate. Must catch up on Skype soon.

This thread rocks! I have an K model which is plagued by the rattle, thought it was the cam chain and went and replaced the tensioner... turns out it wasn't the cam chain/tensioner, so guessing the starter damper needs a fix.
Rattle only below 3k revs, hot or cold. Has anyone had bearing failure at the alternator? I do have a major starting problem, if she doesnt fire on the first crank she wont fire at all on the starter and the alternator wiring connectors look little melted. 28k kms on the clock.

so guessing the starter damper needs a fix
Probably not
The damper doesn't ever cause a rattle -
- more likely to be the primary chain tensioner
To replace it is an engine out job - no other way.
It helps if your carbs are sync'd and clean - the rattle is partly caused by the "whip" in the chains - THIS APPLIES TO CAM AND PRIMARY CHAINS.
Seafoam in the tank also helps
And no, I've not heard of a stator bearing giving up - they run in oil after all.....

Find your old tensioner, and do the mod that is shown above.
Sounds like your battery or reg/rec is going - maybe both - should start IF you use the choke...........

IMO .........
Fix all the melted wiring and give her a real!!! good !!! tune!!! including carbs and that prolly will shut the rattles up ...
These older ladies need to be in tune to start well and to keep the rattles down and if you have melted wiring ... fix it first , before you go tearing into the starter damper !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Shadow and CBRClassic! Will do a full tune up then..valves and carbs and plonk in a new battery. I already have two superdream engines occupying various corners of my house and the last thing I need is mixing the CBR parts with the CB parts Will leave the rattle the way it is if the tune up doesn't fix it.

Hi t85konrad ( and others who need it)...
Until the photos get "found", here is a copy of that thread that I created earlier; along with some of my additional "parts list" info put into a pdf file that you can download...
