Default Think my battery is dead?

Hello all,

Well I have just finished the R1 rectifier conversion on the CBR as it was charging at 18.5 volts, anyway charged the dry ish battery for about 1 hour after topping it up (only 4 months old ) and it was bubbling away so I fitted it to the bike (it was at 15.5 volts ) and hey presto it turned over once and died in the ****.

Have I cooked my battery beyond use? Should I try charging it for longer?

Cheers

Hi. The voltage seems a little high as 14.2 volts or thereabouts is normal and you may have damaged the battery if it was charging at 18.5 volts before you changed the Recifier. Have you checked the main fuse to see if it has blown? I think that you should let a battery stand for a while after charging, but I don't think that is your problem. Have you tested the voltage across the terminals of the battery since the bike stopped? Also your battery cells shouldn't have been dry if that's what you were inferring by the term 'dryish'. Try filling the cells with distilled water up to the correct level, let it stand for a hour or so then check the voltage without it being connected to the bike. Leave the earth connection disconnected to save taking the battery out. Let me know how you get on?

Sounds like the cells may have shorted across the plate. If the battery was over charging and dried out the cells then I would bank on buying a new battery.

What kind of charger did you use on it?

Bought a new battery today and connected it up. All is sweet, thanks for your advice.
