Default temp guage

Wandering if my temperature actually works, the bike never seems to go into the middle section of the guage. I live in northern Canada and the temp is rather cool, does this effect it?

The bike is 16 years old, maybe the thermostat is stuck open.

The bike is old but I believe your thermostat is working. Cold does affect your temp in very cold climates and high elevation. Do this, put your bike in an area closed off from the wind and outside temperature. Put a heater near your pipes and see if the temp goes higher than what you are use to seeing. If it doesn't after 2 minutes of idle...check your thermostat and coolant mixture. Hope this helps.
