Have a 87 CBR 1000. Any problems in using synthetic oil in it? 10w40 or 10w50

 

It may be a mileage thing, like cars. I just went to the Honda dealer this past weekend to buy an oil change kit (washer, filter, and oil) and told them to get me whatever i needed for a 1999 F4. When they heard it had 8000 miles they said i should continue to use regular oil. The guy mentioned that when i switch to synthetic i may need to service my clutch to get it to work right with the oil.

Service the clutch. Sounds like he was pulling your cable.

Old rules about Synthetics vs Naturals no longer apply. You'll be fine as long as the bike is leak free now, using similar viscosity oil should cause any other problems.

 

I started my '92 yamaha fzr600 on mobil 1 15w50 at about 25k miles, no problems whatsoever. I say do it - just make sure it does NOT have the energy conserving logo.

 

Ya, If your fiber clutch plates are close to shot( wore down to min. thickness) you may need a new set, as that is life but as long as you use a " soluable" molly, you should be fine, give it a try.
I run 20- 50 in the summer, and I'll maybe go to 15-40 winter, as I keep it indoors/ heated, in the winter... but ride straight thru, except snow and ice. gets -10 here sometimes !!!!!! E. WA.
A solid molly oil, acts like ball bearings, in your clutch, dosent matter how fresh your plates... do alittle research, lots of oil brand recomendations, here on the CBR FORUM.
BUT AMSOIL, IS THE VERY BESTEST, IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE !!!!!!!!! ( oh now, i've started it!!!!) I had a friend that sold his well running 92 'blade, w/ 132k on it!!!!!!!, He's a farmer and amsoil dealer, and went out of his way to see how his bike( RIDES HARD ), ran w/ amsoil, oil lab tests, cutting filters apart... amazing !!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of excellent oils out there... semi syn / full syn... all better, than the best dino oil... Oh here we go again !!!!!!!!!!!! I prefer top of the line, and low (1500-2kmi) changes.I like a oil w/ a good" "shear"package, as those trany gears, are hell on oil. Dont use fram filters, there junk !!!!!!! In any bike I changed to semi / full syn, I was amazed at the lessening of engine noise. Have fun !!!!!!!!!!

What is it you don't like about the Fram Filters especially if like me you're changing your oil that often (1500 - 2000 miles) ? I agree that the Fram's aren't the best but even if the filter is only adequate how dirty can the oil and filter possibly get.

This is a serious question I'm not trying to debate your statement.
