Default Operating RPM

I know this is a newbie question, but going to ask anyway. I have a 99 900rr. Can any one tell me the normal driving range RPM. I don't want to overheat or mess up the engine driving around in normal trafic. I usualy shift at about 4K rpm. Is that to low? Just courious. Most times i just shift when it feels time, but as soon as i look at the RPM gauge, then i start to worry again.

As long as your not labouring the engine (to low a gear for the speed) or reving the crap out of it (to high a gear for the speed) your fine, 4000 is pretty conservative, but not a bad place to start. you will get used to wot "feels" right. My advice, keep your eyes off the dials & look where you are going. A quick look down at them is all it takes to become a hood ornament.. When I ride in traffic, I always keep a few revs up my sleeve, that is, a gear lower than I need to be in (except for 1st gear). Gives me quick spurt of speed if I have to, and quicker stopping for the same reason. Just take it easy, unless of course your a motorcycle courier, in which case, get a move you slack bugger.

4k is higher than what Honda probably recommends for fuel mileage, but I am a bigger guy and need to be at about 4k to keep the engine from bogging at shifts. You'll get a good feel of where to be based on how many miles before fill up and how the throttle response works if you shift lower. If you keeps the revs up for no reason, you waste gas with no benefit. If you don't keep the revs high enough, you could try to hit the gas to get out of the way and bog down. Because this RPM number is dependent on weight of rider and bike, only you can figure it out.

my carbs are outta sync and i have been crusing around 7-9K. unfortunately i was not paying attention to my odometer yesterday and ran her outta gas due to crusing at higher rpms. i typically would like to shift around 4-6K but she bogs down around there due to the carbs.

yeah i run the sh*T out of my bike.. the highest i go is 9K rpm's unless it's popping a wheelie, but besides that i shift around 6K rpm's when just cruising around.. i do love the powerband around 5K-7K, so i will shift around there but 4K is economy good to shift from what i hear (and it's in the honda manual) it's like first gear 15,second 25, third 35, fourth 45, fifth 55, sixth 55+. that's what they recommend but i havent shifted to second gear at 15mphs unless i had a cop looking haha.. you just got to feel out your bike man, but 4K for economy wise, 6K for alittle more enjoyable ride (and less bog when throttle)

i try to keep mine around 5-6k. I've messed around with different rpms, and I get no different fuel mileage from cruising at 3-4k than I do from 5-6k. So I keep it higher so I can get the hell out of dodge if need be quicker.

gettin moving ill shift at around 6-8k 1st-2nd.. but then i usually click it up to 6th gear if im on a open road and in 6th gear 40mph im not bogging down at all even if i let off the gass and coast then get back into the gas. but thats usally around neighborhoods where i keep the noise lvl down a bit. but in traffic ill keep rpms around 6k. but i see the higher rpms every day when im out riding the7 twisties i have by my house ha.
