Oil pan magnets?
There's a magnet drilled into the oil drain plug on my old XR. You can simply wipe the filings away with a rag, and because it's on the plug, you get a good look at it every time you drain the oil. Darn clever, I thought
Hi Tentacleslap, magnetic drain plugs are fairly commonly available (I bought one myself a couple of weeks ago in preparation for an oil change) but I got the impression the magnets talked about in this thread are somewhat larger and stronger than the "regular" magnetic drain plugs and hence probably more effective at dragging out any metal debris. I'd thought these magnets were epoxied onto the outside of the pan, but I've just realised they're epoxied onto the INSIDE of the pan - and so the debris can only be recovered by removing the pan first. I think I'll be sticking with my magnetic drain plug in the same way that you'll probably be sticking with your's.
