Default just bought 2002 cbr but need help - shifting into 2nd is rough...

I am a total newbie and bought a 2002 cbr 600f4i 2 days ago. Today was my first day with decent weather and really got some riding in. Pleae help me here becuase I feel like my transmission is going to fall out when I shift into 2nd gear. I'll explain exactly whats happening and let me know if this is normal. When I am in first gear and I shift into 2nd gear but stay under 6000 rpm everything is smooth. When I go over 7000 rpm and higher and shift into 2nd my shifter feels like it is slamming back down really hard into my toes and its not a smooth transition. My shifter feels like its fighting back. This only happens when going from first to second though.... Please let me know if I'm about to have a serious problem with my bike. Its only got 5900 miles on it so I thought this would be something I wouldn't be repairing anytime soon.

Are you shifting firmly? First to Second gear ****s require a much firmer shift than the other gears as you shifting over neutral. If your wearing plain old sneakers, it will be hard to get a good shift in. If you have a set of low profile boots, try those out and see if its better. If your only giving it a slight bump into second like you do with the other gears, it will do what your saying is happening. give it a quick firm shift.

If you are giving it a firm shift and it is still slamming down onto your foot. You may have a bent shift fork. You can get a bent shift fork at any point, it doesnt really matter on mileage. Improper shifting is the main culprit of bending the shift fork.

I was pressing it pretty good and wearing boots so the bend shift rod may be the problem. Is that an expensive fix?

not if you do it yourself. You can find the parts you need here in the classifieds or eBay. Do a search, I'm sure there write up somewhere. Good Luck, Ride safe.

Thanks for the help... I made a concious effort to shift harder and that worked much better. Phew... I thought I had a problem with my bike!

Another thing that might help you is dropping your rpms just a little more in between shifts. I was having a similar issue shifting and noticed that bliping the throttle utilizing more wrist movement helped my shifts considerably. Sometimes it's so smooth that I don't even feel it pass through neutral (from 1st to 2nd).
