Default I need to get the tank cap off.

I just bought a new tank off of E bay and it came with a cap on it and no key. I want to replace it with the cap off of my bike anyway so the key will match the ignition and trunk (900 RR). Does anyone have anyideas on how I can get the gas cap off with out hurting the tank. I will destroy the cap if need be but I dont want to hurt the tank. Thanks

It's super easy. See those allen head bolts going around the gas cap? There are actually 3 bolts that hold the cap on. They come off from the top. You just have to find which 3 it is. Thats easy, look at the cap you have and see where there are 3 holes for the bolts to go through. Use an allen bit and pull those 3 off your cap on your tank and the cap comes off. Installation is the reverse.

yeah did that the only thing is it wont come off untill you unlock it. ANd I cant do that with out the key I thought about drilling the lock but wasnt sure if that would do more harm than good.

I was going to say just remove the allen bolts before, but was not sure at the time of whether you did that.
Next step may be to ask a locksmith or call a dealer.

Id try a locksmith....im not one but if i had to guess id say the gas cap lock isnt that complex, ie: there arent that many pins in it...someone competent and with the right tools could probably pick it in a matter of a few minutes.

the cap is spring loaded ( at least the key) so picking it will be harder than you think!! I had a similiar issue once and had to have the lock drilled out
