Default Hydraulic Clutch to Cable Clutch?

Used to ride an F3, but I was hit a couple weeks ago by an unattentive driver and the bike is totalled.

Looking at a VTR 1000 to get with my insurance check.

I have no fingers on my left hand, so I had flipped the cable clutch lever around on the F3 to push it in instead of pull it, and it worked wonderfully. The VTR has a hydraulic clutch with a resevoir, so I'm assuming it wouldn't work to flip it over...

Anyone have any idea if it can be converted to a cable clutch?

I apologize in advance for posting VTR stuff on CBRforum, just didn't feel like creating an account over there to ask one question! If it makes it any better, if the VTR doesn't work out, I've also been eyeing an 06 F4i! =]

I don't think you can convert it, at least cheaply anyway. The hydrualic clutch actually depresses a long shaft, where most cables pull a lever. You may beable to conver the entire system, but I don't know of any kits out there.

Is the resivior on the VFR a cast one that is molded solid to the perch?

If it is, you can probably buy a clutch lever and resevior from a 1000RR and you should be able to flip that one. It has a remote resevior so it shouldn't matter which way the lever is, as long as the resevior is on top.

I think your question refers to whether you can run a hydraulic clutch "upside down" - ?
I don't think the clutch hydraulic unit will work "upside down" BUT having said that, you may be able to adapt a BRAKE hydraulic unit as a clutch setup - if I understand your question correctly.
The lever will be on the inside where you need it, and the fluid reservoir will be the right way up. It should also be easier to depress than the cable unit on your old bike. You may have to look at the plunger length to get the right fluid pressure, but it should work.

It appears that I spoke too soon. I just looked at the clutch resevior mounting on my bike, and it is not a true remote mounted resevior. I thought there was a line leading into the end of the lever, but it is actually one the top side of the perch, not on the side like I thought it was, so you would not be able to flip it. sorry about that.

But shadow brings up an interesting point. If the brakes slave is similiar in size, and doesn't push too much pressure, it could work.

Along the lines of what shadow said, I would be curious about converting the rear brake into a clutch. It would have less pressure as it only supplies one small brake, so the pressure may be close. You would probably have to fit a hard stop on the lever somewhere, but it shouldn't be hard to make it work. This would take a little getting use to, but I think it would be worth looking into. I'm not sure if the VTR have linked brakes like some of the VFR's do, but you could probably fit a set of linked brakes from the a VFR or 1100XX, then still have both front and rear brakes using only the front brake lever.

I have seen true remote clutch perches stock on some 1000's, but I can't remember what models.

Mine is an 05. 04-07 1000RR's all have the same style, and the only ones to have a hydraulic clutch. From looking at it, it truly looks like a remote resevior. Unforntunately, they are not. The resevior is directly mounted to the top side of the slave cylinder. Thats why I spoke too soon, as I never really looked that close at it before and assumed it was a remote mount.
