Is there gas still in the tank?

I would remove the tank, drain all of the gas and let it sit for a day or two so its good and dry. They take an air gun and blow it all out. I would probably suggest removing the petcock or fuel pump depending on what bike you have as well.

if there is anything else left, you can probably take some paint thinner and puor it in the tank, swoosh it around and drain it. The good think about the thinner is it will dry very fast once you drain it, and won't leave any residue behind.

what ever you do, do not use water. the metal inside the tank will rust extremely fast.

I wouldn't use water. The tanks are bare metal inside and will flash rust. Once that happens, they will continue to rust no matter what you do. You will have nothing but problems with your fuel system from then on. thats why you need to use something like paint thinner, that will dry really fast and not leave behind any residue. You could use isopropyl alcohol too, but it would take quite a bit. You just need something that will clean and evaporate quickly and also not harm a bare metal surface.
